AGU/CHORUS Data Citation Best Practices Project Summary

In October 2020, CHORUS was named in a two-year National Science Foundation (NSF) grant made to the American Geophysical Union (AGU). The initial news post can be found here

During the project AGU and CHORUS were able to facilitate and discover additional linkages between papers and related grants and datasets through the use of open APIs.  This led to a 91.73% increase in the number of datasets identified for AGU published content reporting on funded research. An additional project benefit was providing AGU with journal level reporting of data citations enhancing the reporting to their journals and a means to provide links between datasets, grants, author profiles and published articles back to the public access repository for widespread adoption in the future.

All project participants agreed that without proper linkages between papers and related grants and datasets, credit for dataset generation can’t be achieved.

Although the project has come to an end, CHORUS continues to work to identify linkagesbetween papers, related grants, and datasets for all CHORUS stakeholders. We are grateful for the opportunity to work with AGU and NSF on this project and look forward to continued efforts in this area.

A poster of the project and findings was presented at the 2023 Crossref Annual Meeting and can be found here – https://community.crossref.org/t/enhancing-research-connections-through-metadata-a-case-study-with-agu-and-chorus-by-tara-packer-kristina-vrouwenvelder-shelley-stall/4219
