This year, the Cabinet Office in Japan announced a policy regarding immediate open access which will include articles created as a result of competitive research funding from the start of the 2025 fiscal year (April). In addition, immediate data disclosure will be required to further improve the transparency and reproducibility of data supporting the research. It is expected that research institutions should develop and maintain a research data policy in accordance with policies of Japan. Governments and funding agencies are working to strengthen the disclosure of data associated with funded research. In the US, the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) is seeking to establish public access to research data as part of its open science policies and agencies have been requested to formulate their public access policies. Concurrently, there is a rapid increase in published journal articles, proceedings, and book chapters linking to the research data.

At this joint JST/CHORUS Joint Forum speakers from Japan and the US will introduce their organizations’ respective strategies for publishing research data and discuss the challenges researchers face in complying with each country’s national requirements.
