CHORUS, the pioneering not-for-profit driving open research forward, marks a significant decade of breaking down barriers in scholarly communication. What started as a vision in 2014 has developed into a global partnership connecting researchers, libraries, funders and publishers in an unprecedented collaboration.
Over 10 transformative years, CHORUS has revolutionized how research is shared, assessed, and leveraged. From developing cutting-edge infrastructure to supporting global open research initiatives, this not-for-profit has been a catalyst for change, turning the complex world of academic publishing into a more transparent, accessible landscape.
“Reaching our 10-year milestone is more than a celebration—it’s a testament to the power of collective vision,” said Howard Ratner, Executive Director of CHORUS. “Over the past decade, we have helped uncover hard-to-find data and progress conversations across the research ecosystem. This year alone, we had 21 sponsors supporting our work, and couldn’t achieve what we do without the vision of our working group and board members. Our connected stakeholders demonstrate our diverse partners, including funders, institutions, service providers, and publishers, who are committed to open research.”
Dawn Melley, Senior Director, Publishing Operations at IEEE and Chair of the CHORUS Board of Directors said, “By bringing together stakeholders in the scholarly communication process, CHORUS is fostering an environment where transparency and inclusivity thrive, empowering every researcher to contribute to a collective vision of knowledge that benefits all. This milestone is not just a reflection of our achievements; it is a call to action for continued collaboration and dedication to the principles of open research.”
Our focus in 2024 was on key areas of community advancement to support our stakeholders in making open research work:
- Expanding Research Accessibility: Added over 1.47 million new publication records to the CHORUS corpus, marking an 18.9% growth compared to the previous year, while expanding tracking of digitally preserved content to include all DOIs in our system.
- Enhancing Global Connections: Integrated JaLC DOIs to include articles registered by Japanese corporations and organizations, further broadening our global reach.
- Fostering Community Engagement: Hosted a Community Roundtable and eight online forums, attracting widespread participation and engagement on diverse topics essential to the research community.
- Progressing Metadata Innovation: Successfully completed the INFORMATE project (NSF Grant #2334426) in partnership with Metadata Game Changers, resulting in improved metadata quality for NSF, USGS, and USAID, alongside enhanced workflows and increased agency engagement.
- Preprint Service Growing: Expanded our preprint service to better identify funded research and connect it to published work, adding Optica Open as a key partner.
- Collaborating on Initiatives: Partnered with The International Bunch to conduct a customer value assessment and strategic marketing, while collaborating with Molecular Connections to enhance technical development capabilities.
- Supporting Stakeholders: Developed targeted reports highlighting retracted articles, built new integrations and introduced new features to provide stakeholders with actionable insights and tools.
- Tracking Research Resources: Continued collaborations with CSIRO, publisher members, and other organizations to identify and link research resources and user facilities in published articles.
Looking ahead, CHORUS remains committed to its core mission: making research more open, interoperable, and impactful. The future promises even more innovative solutions to connect researchers, funders, and institutions in unprecedented ways.
