Mail from the IRS doesn’t always bear good news, but we welcomed the letter we received last week: CHORUS is officially a charitable organization, having been granted 501(c)(3) status by the US Internal Revenue Service. The designation, which is retroactive to October 1, 2013, when CHOR incorporated, means that we have met the rigorous standards to qualify as charity organized and operated for the public benefit. It is an important affirmation of our mission to advance public access to funded research. Among the implications of our new status is that donations to CHORUS are tax-deductible in the US to the extent permitted by law.
